Undergraduate Programs - Minors

For Business Majors

Business students can earn an undergraduate minor in accounting, economics, entrepreneurship, finance, international business, management information systems, management, or marketing. A minimum of 12 credit hours in the particular discipline is required to earn a minor (except for economics, which requires 18 credit hours). At least nine of the 12 credit hours must be earned on the Tampa campus, but some disciplines require all courses to be earned on the Tampa campus.

Accounting:
Students majoring in business may earn a minor in accounting by taking the following four courses:

  • ACG 3103 Intermediate Financial Accounting I
  • ACG 3341 Cost Accounting and Control
  • ACG 3401 Accounting Information Systems
  • TAX 4001 Concepts of Federal Income Taxation.

Note that there are pre-requisites for these courses and students must score at least 70% on the Accounting Competency Exam to enroll in ACG 3103. In addition, students must earn a grad of “C” (not C-) or better in each course; all course attempts will be included in the calculation unless grade forgiveness has been applied. Only one grade may be forgiven in the minor. For this minor, all courses must be taken in residence on the Tampa campus.

Economics:
Students (both business and non-business) may earn a minor in economics by satisfactorily completing 18 credit hours in the discipline. The requirements are:

  • ECO 2013 Economic Principles: Macroeconomics
  • ECO 2023 Economic Principles: Microeconomics
  • Four upper-level economics electives (including QMB 3200 Business & Economics Stats II).

Choose electives from courses beginning with ECO, ECS, ECP. ECO 4905 Independent Study or ECO 4914 Independent Research may not be counted toward the minor. Students must obtain prior program approval from the Economics Department’s undergraduate advisor to pursue to minor.

Finance:
Students majoring in Business Administration may minor in Finance. The requirements are:

  • FIN 4504 Principles of Investments
  • FIN 4303 Financial Institutions
  • FIN 4414 Advanced Corporate Finance
  • FIN 4443 Financial Policies & Strategies (pre-requisite FIN 4414)

A grade of “C-“ or higher required in all minor courses

Entrepreneurship:
Business students and industrial engineering students may minor in entrepreneurship by completing ENT 4014 New Venture Formation and EIN 4933 Creativity and Technology as well as any two of the following four courses:

  • EIN 4933 New Product Development
  • ENT 4424 Venture Capital
  • MAN 4802 Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management
  • MAN 4804 Small Business Management Counseling

Note that there are pre-requisites for some of these courses and a GPA of 2.0 or better must be achieved in all minor course work (completed at USF or any other institution). Courses may not be taken on an S/U basis.

International Business:
At least nine of the 12 credit hours required for the international business minor must be selected from the approved upper-level international business courses listed below. Students may choose a fourth course from this list or, based on the student’s international area of interest, may choose an upper-level area studies course offered outside of the College of Business.

  • ECO 3703 International Economics
  • FIN 3604 International Finance
  • MAN 4600 International Mgmt
  • MAN 4631 Global Perspectives (pre-requisites: FIN 3403, MAR 3023, & MAN 3025)
  • MAR 4156 International Marketing
  • ISM 4382 Global Info Systems

Management:
Business majors may earn a minor in management by successfully completing the following four courses:

  • MAN 3240 Organizational Behavior Analysis
  • MAN 3301 Human Resources Management
  • MAN 4282 Organizational Assessment
  • MAN 4737 Integrated Management Applications
    MAN 3240, MAN 3301, and MAN 4282 are prerequisites for MAN 4737.

Management Information Systems:
Business students may earn an MIS minor by successfully completing two required courses as well as two approved ISM elective courses. Students choose two approved ISM electives; a grade of “C” (not C-) or better must be earned in ISM 3011. The required courses are:

  • ISM 3113 Systems Analysis & Design
  • ISM 4212 Database Administration (pre-requisite: ISM 3113)

Marketing:
Students who successfully complete MAR 3823 Marketing Management, as well as three of the upper-level marketing courses (excluding MAR 4824) may earn a minor in marketing. Students must earn a grade of “C” (not C-) or better in each course.

For Non-Business Majors

Non-business majors can earn a general business minor or a minor in entrepreneurship.

General Business
This minor requires with 18 credit hours of specific coursework and students must apply for the minor in the College of Business. In addition, students must take an introductory computer course with content similar to CGS 2100 Computers in Business (or demonstrate competency using standard business word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software) as well as take the following courses:

  • ACG 2021 Principles of Financial Accounting AND ACG 2071 Principles of Managerial Accounting*
  • ECO 1000 Basic Economics*
  • FIN 3403 Principles of Finance (PR ECO 1000 and ACG 3074; will need permit to register)
  • MAR 3023 Basic Marketing
  • MAN 3025 Principles of Management
  • MAN 4802 Small Business Management (PR ACG 3074 and MAR 3023; will need permit to register)

* ACG 3074 Managerial Accounting for Non-Business Majors may be substituted for ACG 2021 Principles of Financial Accounting and ACG 2071 Principles of Managerial Accounting. ECO 2013 Economic Principles: Macroeconomics and ECO 2023 Economic Principles: Microeconomics may be substituted for ECO 1000.
Note that there are pre-requisites for some courses and a grade point average of 2.0 or better must be achieved in all minor course work completed at USF or any other institution. Courses may not be taken on an S/U basis and at least 12 or the 18 required credit hours must be taken in residence on the Tampa campus.

Entrepreneurship
An undergraduate minor in entrepreneurship is also available to non-business majors. For most non-business majors, the minor can be completed in 15 credit hours; students who are industrial engineering majors can complete the minor with 12 credit hours. Students must complete ENT 4014 New Venture Formation, EIN 4933 Creativity and Technology, and ENT 3003 Principles of Business as well as any two of the following four courses:

  • EIN 4933 New Product Development
  • ENT 4424 Venture Capital
  • MAN 4802 Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management
  • MAN 4804 Small Business Management Counseling
