The Advertising Major - The Zimmerman Advertising Program

There are two paths to an advertising degree at the University of South Florida. Students may choose between a business-oriented sequence of study (in the College of Business) that emphasizes marketing, ROI, and core business education and a mass communications (in the School of Mass Communications) sequence of study that focuses on advertising campaigns, creative and messaging, and media strategy.

The College of Business program, provides students the opportunity to combine the creative aspects of advertising with knowledge, skills, and abilities in accounting, economics, finance, information systems, management, marketing and strategy. Students choosing the advertising major in the College of Business, must declare a business major and, before beginning any advertising (ADV) courses, must meet the following pre-requisites in addition to the College of Business' limited-access requirements:

  • 2.75 overall GPA in first 30 credit hours (see a business advisor for assistance in calculating)
  • Earn a 60% minimum score on the Mass Communications English Diagnostic Test (EDT) prior to taking MMC 2100. Students who transfer in MMC 2100 must have a 70% on the EDT.
  • Completion of the following courses with a grade of C or better:
    • ENC 1101 English Composition
    • ENC 1102 English Composition I
    • MMC 2100 Writing for the Mass Medi
    • MMC 3602 Mass Communications in Society

To earn the degree, a minimum of 22 credit hours of upper-level advertising and marketing courses are required.
