MBA Curriculum - International Business Track

The rapid integration of the economies of the world and the globalization of business present major challenges to those who would be leaders in tomorrow's business world. MBA graduates who understand the issues, problems, and opportunities inherent in an international environment will have a major advantage in their ability to function and succeed in the global business arena. This track provides the background, knowledge and skills important in doing business across national boundaries. It also provides an understanding of the cultural and business issues associated with that environment.

Students must complete three courses. One course must be selected from the following (required):

ECO 6705 International Economic Issues
Analysis of international economic relationships and institutions and the effects of changing economic conditions and policy on the climate for international business and investment. (Prerequisites: ECP 6702 Managerial Economics and ECO 6708 Global Economic Environment of Business).

FIN 6605 International Financial Management
Development of a strong foundation in international financial management, including (among others) the topics of financial environment; foreign exchange markets; foreign exchange risk and decision-making models; operating, transaction and accounting exposures; worldwide sales; process of internationalization; foreign trade zones; various swaps and decision-making models; and direct foreign investments and swap arrangements. (Prerequisite: FIN 6406 Financial Management).

MAN 6607 Managing International Cultural Differences
This course examines functions, activities, and interpersonal skills required of managers in multinational, multicultural organizations with specific attention given to selected regions of the world. Focuses on how existence of different cultures affects management behavior and builds interpersonal skills to accommodate success.

MAR 6158 International Marketing Management
Analysis of the international marketing environment and the difference between domestic and international marketing. Emphasis on preparing international market plans for a specific country. (Prerequisite: MAR 6815 Marketing Management).

GEB 6930 International Business Experience
This course is specifically for students who are participating in an international business internship or other overseas study for which they could not otherwise get credit. The course involves completing a research project for which the internship or overseas study provides input data or information.

ISM 6442 International Aspects of Information Systems
An examination of the role of information technology in international organizations. Topics covered will include global networking and service levels, and issues concerning country diversity, national IT environment, and IT policy. (Prerequisite: ISM 6021 Management Information Systems).

Advanced International Business

The advanced international business track prepares students to function in foreign business environments through area studies and language training. An Advanced International Business certificate will be awarded to those who

  1. complete the basic track,
  2. complete at least one additional international business course beyond those taken for the basic track, and
  3. complete an approved outside area studies course and demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language (native speaker of a foreign language, studied at a foreign institution of higher education, or pass level III on the language placement test through the USF Languages Department).

Study abroad courses may be used to satisfy the outside studies course. Contact an advisor for more information.
