Sharon Hanna-West
Instructor
Sharon Hanna-West is an Exide Distinguished Lecturer in management and a faculty associate for the USF Center for Entrepreneurship. She developed the Building Sustainable Enterprise track for USF’s MBA program and teaches several courses in the track, including business ethics, environmental law, and sustainability. She has won numerous teaching awards since she began teaching at USF in 1992.
Active in growth and sustainability issues, she studies solutions to climate change and determining how to make sustainable practices affordable and, whenever possible, profitable. She coordinated USF’s first Building Sustainable Enterprise symposium in 2006, bringing area businesses into a dialogue about sustainability. That effort has since expanded into an annual multi-disciplinary sustainability symposium showcasing green businesses and practices, faculty research related to sustainability, and student projects.
Hanna-West holds a JD from the University of Florida, where she focused on environmental law. She later founded a corporation engaged in international trade. She is a frequent lecturer and her expertise is often sought by mainstream media seeking comment on sustainability, ethics, and environmentally-friendly business practices.

Current Research
Dr. Hanna-West's work has been focused on engaging key stakeholders in the process of positive change and facilitating a shared, strategic vision among business leaders. She has directed student sustainability applied research on many entities such as Lykes Industries, Mote Marine and the City of Tampa, giving students opportunities to apply tools learned in the classroom to real life cases and improve the organizations sustainable performance.
Service
- Coordinated the first Building Sustainable Enterprise symposium at USF in April, 2006 that expanded into a multi-discipline business sustainability symposium in 2007.
- Formed a committee and partnered with the Hillsborough City/County Planning Commission to host the first Getting Green by Going Green business sustainability expo at the USF Sun Dome
- Chaired the committees that hosted the combined statewide Campus and Community Sustainability Conference and Business EXPO in October 2009.
